Dr. Nirmal Shah, CEO of Nature Seychelles, has been named one of the 50 individuals shaping the African Blue Economy between 2023 and 2024 by MARITIMAFRICA.
“I am humbled to be recognised as one of the 50 individuals who influenced the African Blue Economy between 2023 and 2024,” Dr Shah said.
The recognition comes from MARITIMAFRICA, which scoured more than 38 African coastal nations to spotlight “inspiring figures” driving the sustainable use and development of the continent’s vast marine and coastal resources.

MARITIMAFRICA described the honorees as “institutional leaders, passionate professionals, and staunch advocates for environmental sustainability,” emphasizing their crucial roles in building Africa’s “Blue” future.
“The African Blue Economy is a strategic pillar for the sustainable development of the continent, relying on vast marine and coastal resources with immense potential. Every day, these visionary actors are committed to transforming this vision into reality through concrete actions, innovations, and ambitious policies,” the organization noted.
“Congratulations to the individuals featured on this list! And for the others, we wish you an enlightening discovery and, above all, may you find a source of inspiration in it,” they added.
Dr. Shah’s leadership in marine conservation, including pioneering coral reef restoration and championing marine protected areas such as Cousin Island, has placed Seychelles firmly on the map as a global leader in Blue Economy initiatives.
