Seychelles News Agency: Artisanal fishermen in Seychelles to benefit from new quay, ice machine
(Seychelles News Agency) - A greater number of fishing vessels will be catered for in Seychelles after phase two of the Providence Artisanal Fisheries Facilitieswas inaugurated on Thursday, September 6th.
Phase two of the development, costing approximately $10 million, includes the expansion of 216 metres of quay, ten mooring buoys, a landing shed and a ten-tonne ice-making facility among others. The project was financed by the government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency(JICA).
Successful roll-out of Praslin coastal fishery plan is a disruption of the business-as-usual model
I congratulate the Praslin fishermen in particular the Praslin Fishers Association (PFA) for the finalization of the Praslin coastal fishery plan. Decade old EU-Seychelles accord gets new lease
Seychelles Nation; 2nd February 2018: The Seychelles and the European Union (EU) have signed and formalised the Agreed Records of the EU-Seychelles Joint meeting. The two-day meeting was conducted on January 31st and February 1st wherein representatives from the European Commission and those from the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA) met to discuss the agreement which allows access for EU vessels in our waters and EU support to the local fishing sector.

Seychelles has considerable opportunities to continue climbing the income ladder, especially given its natural capital, which is of global significance, says a recent World Bank report, the Seychelles Systematic Country Diagnostic (SCD)“Seychelles has built a powerful brand name linked to the abundance and beauty of its natural environment and resources, including its tropical islands, beaches, and the ocean. The opportunity is for Seychelles to consolidate its regional, and even global, leadership status in the management and sustainable use of these resources”. A further source of opportunities for Seychelles arises from its strategic location in the western Indian Ocean. This is well-aligned with the emerging global focus on sustainable ocean resource use and management – the Blue Economy.

Civil Society Wants a Voice in Tuna Fisheries Management
Nature Seychelles’ Eric Blais recently returned from the 6th session of the CSO/Private sector forum on sustainable Tuna Fisheries management in the South West Indian Ocean held in Mombasa, Kenya. The meeting was hosted by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Tuna Fisheries Alliance of Kenya (TuFAK). Such meetings have been held annually since 2010. This is the third such meeting attended by a Nature Seychelles representative.
